YMCA of Columbia proud sponsor of Columbia SC Kids’ Marathon

The YMCA of Columbia is a proud sponsor of the 2012 Columbia SC Kids’ Marathon, the first event of its kind in Columbia. It is an innovative six-month endurance-building running and walking program designed for children kindergarten through fifth grade. Children will run the distance of a full marathon (26.2 miles) over the course of six months. To achieve this goal, kids must train for the last mile of their marathon by running a total of 25.2 miles in increments between September 6, 2011 and March 5, 2012 to qualify for race day participation. This is not a timed event and the motto is “if you had fun, you won!”

The Kids Marathon is being held in conjunction with the 2012 Columbia SC Marathon on March 10, 2012 at 7:10 a.m.

Visit the Kids Marathon website for additional information and to register!

Healthy Living Initiative for Afterschool and Summer Programs

The Y would like to share some exciting changes taking place in our afterschool and summer programs. As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of our programming, we will be making changes that will lead to increases in the amount of physical activity children accumulate and improve the nutritional quality of the foods served in our afterschool and summer programs.

Over the next 2 years (2011-2013) we will be evaluating these changes by collecting children’s physical activity using small motion sensors called accelerometers and pedometers, and observe the types of foods children eat during our programs. This information will be invaluable and serve to inform us on where our programs need improvement.

We want to ensure that as a parent of a child attending one of our programs that you are aware of these improvement efforts and that physical activity and nutrition information may be collected from your child. This information will also be used for research purposes, will be published, but the identities of all children involved will not be revealed. If you do not want this information collected from your child, please indicate this to your afterschool or summer YMCA staff. If your child does not want to participate in this evaluation, they simply need to indicate this to the YMCA staff. Your child will still be able to participate in all our programs.

We look forward to these exciting changes and believe that through these efforts we will be able to provide better programming for our YMCA members and, importantly, influence the health and wellness of the children attending.
