Tom Hoskins Memorial Sprint Triathlon

Saturday, July 28, 2012

Get ready for our 3rd annual sprint triathlon at the NorthWest Family YMCA! Our triathlon is held in memory of Tom Hoskins who was killed in a cycling – vehicle accident while participating in a fundraising cycle event. All proceeds raised benefit our Partners with Youth campaign.

Triathlon Distance:
Swim: 350-yard pool swim
Bike: 13-mile bike course through the rolling hills of Irmo, S.C.
Run: 3.1-mile out and back course that is largely shaded

Duathlon Distance:
Begins with a 1-mile run in place of the swim, continued on the regular race course to the 13-mile out and back bike course and the 3.1-mile run.

The Tom Hoskins Memorial Sprint Triathlon is held in memory of Tom Hoskins who was hit and killed during a charity bicycle ride in 2007. Hoskins’ widow and race organizers hope the event will raise awareness of bicycling safety in South Carolina.

Healthy Living Initiative for Afterschool and Summer Programs

The Y would like to share some exciting changes taking place in our afterschool and summer programs. As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of our programming, we will be making changes that will lead to increases in the amount of physical activity children accumulate and improve the nutritional quality of the foods served in our afterschool and summer programs.

Over the next 2 years (2011-2013) we will be evaluating these changes by collecting children’s physical activity using small motion sensors called accelerometers and pedometers, and observe the types of foods children eat during our programs. This information will be invaluable and serve to inform us on where our programs need improvement.

We want to ensure that as a parent of a child attending one of our programs that you are aware of these improvement efforts and that physical activity and nutrition information may be collected from your child. This information will also be used for research purposes, will be published, but the identities of all children involved will not be revealed. If you do not want this information collected from your child, please indicate this to your afterschool or summer YMCA staff. If your child does not want to participate in this evaluation, they simply need to indicate this to the YMCA staff. Your child will still be able to participate in all our programs.

We look forward to these exciting changes and believe that through these efforts we will be able to provide better programming for our YMCA members and, importantly, influence the health and wellness of the children attending.
