The YMCA of Columbia is a proud sponsor of the 2012 Columbia SC Kids’ Marathon, the first event of its kind in Columbia. It is an innovative six-month endurance-building running and walking program designed for children kindergarten through fifth grade. Children will run the distance of a full marathon (26.2 miles) over the course of six months. To achieve this goal, kids must train for the last mile of their marathon by running a total of 25.2 miles in increments between September 6, 2011 and March 5, 2012 to qualify for race day participation. This is not a timed event and the motto is “if you had fun, you won!”
The Kids Marathon is being held in conjunction with the 2012 Columbia SC Marathon on March 10, 2012 at 7:10 a.m.
Visit the Kids Marathon website for additional information and to register!

The Y would like to share some exciting changes taking place in our afterschool and summer programs. As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of our programming, we will be making changes that will lead to increases in the amount of physical activity children accumulate and improve the nutritional quality of the foods served in our afterschool and summer programs.
Over the next 2 years (2011-2013) we will be evaluating these changes by collecting children’s physical activity using small motion sensors called accelerometers and pedometers, and observe the types of foods children eat during our programs. This information will be invaluable and serve to inform us on where our programs need improvement.
We want to ensure that as a parent of a child attending one of our programs that you are aware of these improvement efforts and that physical activity and nutrition information may be collected from your child. This information will also be used for research purposes, will be published, but the identities of all children involved will not be revealed. If you do not want this information collected from your child, please indicate this to your afterschool or summer YMCA staff. If your child does not want to participate in this evaluation, they simply need to indicate this to the YMCA staff. Your child will still be able to participate in all our programs.
We look forward to these exciting changes and believe that through these efforts we will be able to provide better programming for our YMCA members and, importantly, influence the health and wellness of the children attending.
The NorthWest Family YMCA offers an afterschool program that is far from ordinary! Emphasizing our Christian mission, the Y engages students in a variety of ways – see why we are so different!
Tracks
Tracks are activity choices that students can choose from each day. Each day offers an active track, a creative track and a hodge podge track. Of corse, homework assistance is offered as a track each day. Tracks run for 45-minute segments and students can choose up to two tracks per day!
Choice
We believe in the power of choice. Students get to choose each day what activities or tracks they participate in. We believe that allowing students to choose what they do each day helps build a student’s understanding of making positive choices and also ensures that all students are participating and engaged in that activity. After all, they chose it for themselves!
Activities
Active tracks are just that, ACTIVE! Sports, games, contests, challenges and group exercise classes – whatever moves you.
Creative tracks incorporate the best of being creative. Arts and crafts, drama, dance, singing, skits and more help your student keep those creative juices flowing even after school is out.
Hodge Podge is a little bit of everything! Swimming, archery, nature hikes, field trips, you name it. If it’s crazy and fun, it falls into this group of tracks!
Homework is offered during the first track of every day. Our staff are prepared to ensure your student gets their homework finished so that when they go home, it’s family time rather than homework time. Homework is an optional track, so if your student doesn’t have homework or if you prefer to do it at home, it’s no problem!
The Difference
What makes the Y afterschool programs so different from any other program? Tracks, Choice and Activities are just the beginning. Everyone LOVES CAMP! Just becuase school has started back doesn’t mean the fun should end. WE ARE NOT A DAY CARE! WE RUN DAY CAMP DURING AFTER SCHOOL HOURS! That means we don’t just sit in a room and watch TV. We move, we play, we engage students to be active, be creative and have fun! Also, don’t forget, unlike most programs, our program doesn’t close when school is out. We offer all day camp at no additional charge. Where else can you find all of this? Only at the Y!
