About Coach Ayers
Mike Ayers, recently retired, was a very successful football coach at Wofford College for 30 seasons. Coach Ayers guided the Terriers to appearances in The Division ll Playoffs in 1990 and 1991, the Division l FCS Playoffs in 2003, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2017, and claimed Southern Conference titles in 2003, 2007, 2010, 2012 and 2017.
Coach Ayers was the longest-serving head coach of any sport in school history. In 2003 he was awarded the Eddie Robinson Award given to the most outstanding FCS head coach in the nation. In his spare time, he earned a black belt in karate, struggles with a fly fishing addiction and developed a knack for landscape painting. He and his wife Julie are the proud parents of three children and have five grandchildren.
A devout Christian, Coach Ayers rediscovered his faith along the way which helped him recast the relative importance of the game. “When I accepted Christ, I accepted that life was not just about me”, says Ayers.
