The YMCA has long been America’s favorite swimming instructor. Whether just learning how to swim, improving strokes or competitive swim, Y members are in safe hands with our certified swimming instructors and lifeguards.
Swimming is a life skill as well as great exercise and a challenging sport. The aquatics programs at the Y are about more than just the techniques and skills; they are about building friendships, developing self-esteem and creating positive experiences that will last a lifetime.
Note: Swimmers under 48″ are required to wear a lifejacket and stay in the shallow water at all times if they are unable to pass the swim test. The swim test consists of swimming 25 yards from the shallow end to the deep end without stopping, treading water for 1 minute and swimming back to the shallow end without stopping. Swimmers that pass the swim test will receive a wristband.

The purpose of the Y Swim Lessons Program is to develop competency in swimming along with confidence and endurance. The goals of the program are to teach personal safety, personal growth and stroke development in a values-based environment. Your child will be advanced to the next level only when he or she proficiently and safely performs the skills within his or her level. We teach individually to each child to advance their skills. We expect each child to learn and progress at his or her own rate.

YMCA of Columbia Swim Team – The Mudcats
The YMCA of Columbia Swim Club was formed in 1999 and is a YMCA and a USS year-round competitive swim team offering high-quality professional coaching and technique instruction for all ages and abilities. The goal of the Mudcat Swim Team is to provide every member an opportunity to improve swimming skills and achieve success at his or her level of ability, from novice to national competitor.
All staff are certified USA Swimming Coaches and have access to the most comprehensive training and certification program for youth coaches of any sport in the United States.
The Columbia YMCA Swim Club’s (YCSC Mudcats) philosophy is to teach the swimmers how to set long and short-term goals while practicing Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, and Caring. Through the participation of the Bronze, Silver, and Gold groups, the swimmer gains knowledge of the four competitive strokes, learns the starts and turns for each stroke, and gains experience by competing on a swim team. The Junior and Senior groups work to achieve goals such as gaining mastery of strokes, turns, starts, and to improve their times by learning how to improve their fitness and health. We also like to have fun!
