Standing Together in the Wake of Hurricane Helene

We at the YMCA of Columbia are profoundly aware of the hardships our Midlands community has endured in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. While we were fortunate to escape the storm’s most destructive forces, we recognize the immense challenges faced by our neighbors to the west and north. Our hearts go out to those who have lost homes, livelihoods, and loved ones.

Our Downtown YMCA remained open throughout the storm, even during a brief power outage on Friday morning. We were grateful to offer shelter, showers, and a sense of community to those affected by the storm.

As soon as conditions allowed, our Ballentine and Orangeburg branches reopened, followed by the Jeep Rogers Family YMCA. Finally, on Monday afternoon, power was restored to the Northwest Family YMCA. While we’re still working through a few minor issues, such as Spectrum cable TV, we’ve been able to provide essential services like electricity, Wi-Fi, and a supportive environment.

We are deeply impressed by the resilience, generosity, and positivity our community has demonstrated during this challenging time. It’s an honor to serve such a remarkable group of people.

In the coming week, we will be providing additional support to the Greater Augusta YMCA, helping them to deliver food to those in need. They are currently in need of shelf-stable milk. Donations can be dropped off at any of our YMCA of Columbia locations.

To support other YMCAs and communities affected by Hurricane Helene, through monetary donations please visit www.ymca.org. Your generosity can make a significant difference in the lives of those in need.

Together, we can weather any storm.

Sincerely,
Jim Vietti
