What's Happening at the Y
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a free, 12-week, small group program designed for adult cancer survivors.

This program fulfills the important need of supporting cancer survivors in our community. They will work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to safely achieve their goals such as building strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. By focusing on the whole person and not the disease, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is helping people move beyond cancer in spirit, mind and body.

This program is free to participants and is funded by generous donors to the YMCA’s Annual Campaign.

Locations: Downtown YMCA, NorthWest Family YMCA in Irmo, Jeep Rogers Family YMCA at Lake Carolina

Next session: begins February 16

For more information or to inquire about participation in the program, email livestrong@columbiaymca.org.

Learn Heartsaver® CPR and AED – a life may count on it.

Did you know… about 92 percent of sudden cardiac arrest victims die before reaching the hospital? However, statistics prove that if more people knew CPR, more lives could be saved. Immediate CPR can double, or even triple, a victim’s chance of survival.

In cooperation with the YMCA of Columbia, Palmetto Health will be offering Heartsaver® CPR AED courses at ‘Y’ locations in February. This is a video-based, instructor-led course that teaches adult, child and infant CPR and AED use, as well as how to relieve choking.

The course teaches skills with American Heart Association’s research-proven Practice-While-Watching (PWW) technique, which allows instructors to observe the students, provide feedback and guidance.

The course runs approximately 4 hours and is being offered to YMCA staff, members and the community at a discounted cost of $25.

Who can take it?

Anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in CPR and AED use to meet job, regulatory or other requirements. YMCA staff and class instructors are also encouraged to take the course.
