What's Happening at the Y


Ages: 5-11

This program introduces youth to cheerleading and will enhance self-esteem, confidence and character building. Structured practice will help your child learn cheers, cheer dances, chants, jumps, showmanship, beginner stunts and tumbling. The program is designed to teach girls the basic steps needed to become a great cheerleader. Each team will have cheer practice 1 day a week and will cheer for a team during Saturday morning flag football games.

Registration: opens May 18, closes July 13

Practice: starts week of August 3

Games: starts August 15 (games double up on September 12 and 19)

$78 for YMCA members
$98 for non-members
Price includes full cheerleading uniform

Back to School Youth Flag Football

Ages: 3 – 14

This program provides young players a fun and exciting opportunity to engage in a non-contact sport while learning lessons in teamwork and sportsmanship. Designed to help your child learn the game of football and have lots of fun while doing it! Players will learn the fundamentals of football, both offensive and defensive strategies. During the games players will have the opportunity to play different positions. Everyone gets to play a minimum of half the game.

Program includes one practice per week and Saturday games (except two games played on September 12 and 19). All players are recommended to wear a mouth guard.

Registration: May 18-July 13, 2015
(There is a $15 late registration fee July 14-20)

Season: Practice starts week of August 3. Games begin August 15.

YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps adults at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes reduce their risk for developing the disease by taking steps that will improve their overall health and well-being. Research by the National Institutes of Health has shown that programs like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can reduce the number of new cases of type 2 diabetes by 58%, and 71% in adults over the age of 60.

The YMCA of Columbia is the first YMCA in South Carolina to offer this program.

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a free, 12-week, small group program designed for adult cancer survivors.

This program fulfills the important need of supporting cancer survivors in our community. They will work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to safely achieve their goals such as building strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. By focusing on the whole person and not the disease, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is helping people move beyond cancer in spirit, mind and body.

This program is free to participants and is funded by generous donors to the YMCA’s Annual Campaign.

Y-Club Afterschool Program

The Y-Club Afterschool Program is a fun place to be with lots of positive staff interaction and learning opportunities. We provide a healthy afterschool snack, physical fitness time, homework help and a wide variety of other activities, including STEM and time to socialize with friends or play games.

Hours: School dismissal – 6:15 p.m.

Ages: Kindergarten – 8th grade

Weekly Cost: $45 members/$60 non-members

When there is a half day at school, we will still hold afterschool and pick up the children from school. School in-service days and student holidays are included in regular weekly fees, except for holiday breaks (Winter Break and Spring Break) are registered and paid for separately.

My Fit Program

My Fit is a suite of services to help members learn, grow and thrive. It is a multi-step program to meet your needs, whether for fitness, inspiration or nutrition. We’ll help you develop life-promoting habits. Powered by MobileFit! A new, easy-to-use system to help you reach your health goals.


Among the various fitness programs offered at the YMCA of Columbia, SmartStart stands out by taking a unique approach to being more healthy. These one on one sessions combine nutritional information and fitness with coach support to encourage participants to meet their goals. 3 sessions: FREE

Healthy Eating:

Healthy Eating includes three sessions with a Healthy Living Coach to identify potential roadblocks to healthy eating. Participants learn how to use the MobileFit Nutrition application to track calories, nutrition, water consumption and will also learn how to use to support healthy eating. 3 sessions: $49

Personal Training:

Get one-on-one fitness training with a nationally certified trainer. Designed to evaluate, motivate, and educate so that you get the most out of every workout. Your trainer will provide motivation to help you meet your goal, train for a sport, get ready for a special event, or just increase your level of health. Our qualified trainers will evaluate your current fitness level and design a specific program for you based on your goals. For new personal training participants only. Six 30-minute sessions: $99

MobileFit is a web-based group of tools designed to support our My Fit series of programs.

How do I get started on MobileFit?
It’s easy to get started using MobileFit by registering for one of the three My Fit programs: SmartStart, Healthy Eating or Personal Training. Coaches will enroll participants during their first session.

How can I access MobileFit once I am enrolled?
Choose one of the many options to access MobileFit; there are touchscreens in your local branch; to print a custom workout and log your results: download the MobileFit App for free on an iPhone; access MobileFit from other smart phones through; or access on your iPad or tablet.

Youth Swim Lessons

Youth Swim Lessons

These lessons follow the YMCA of the USA Progressive Swim Lesson Program. There are six levels of progressively challenging YMCA swim classes covering all strokes, diving fundamentals and safety skills. Lessons are offered during the weekdays as well as the weekends.

The purpose of the Y Swim Lessons Program is to develop competency in swimming along with confidence and endurance.  The goals of the program are to teach personal safety, personal growth and stroke development in a values-based environment.  Your child will be advanced to the next level only when he or she proficiently and safely performs the skills within his or her level. We teach individually to each child to advance their skills. We expect each child to learn and progress at his or her own rate.

Registration: See below for registration dates for each session. Starting in Spring 2015, registration for weekday lessons opens three Thursdays prior to session start date for members and two Thursdays prior to session start date for non-members. Registration for Saturday lessons opens three weeks before session start date for members and two weeks for non-members.

Ages: 3-5

This is an introductory swimming level class that helps children to adjust to the water and learn basic swimming movements as they progress toward swimming independently.

Building on PIKE skills, this level is for children who can independently swim at least five feet without a flotation device. Classes will focus on teaching progressive kick, arm, and breathing techniques.

Building on EEL skills, this level is for children who are able to swim 15 feet independently without a flotation and with their face in the water with rhythmic breathing.

Register for 3-5 year olds
Ages: 6-12

This class is for those who have little or no experience in the water. It gets children acquainted with the pool, the use of floatation devices, and front and back floating. By the end of this level, they should know the front and back crawl side stroke.

Building on POLLIWOG skills, this level is for swimmers that are able to complete at least 15 yards of front and back crawl independently. Children will be performing more skills without a floatation device. Class will focus on progressive techniques for the front and back crawl,  side stroke, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, as well as some diving skills.

Building on GUPPY skills, this level is for children able to swim 25 yards on front and back with rhythmic breathing, able to jump into the deep end of the pool and swim to the wall, front and back float for 20 seconds and treat water for 30 seconds. Class will focus on building swim endurance, enhancing stroke technique, and introducing breaststroke and butterfly movements.

Register for 6-12 year olds.

Swordfish Summer Swim Team

The Jeep Rogers Family YMCA Swordfish Summer Swim Team teaches the value of competition through teamwork, sportsmanship and doing one’s best. The swim team provides a competitive experience for boys and girls in the summer months. Swimmers improve their strokes and build their endurance under the guidance of an excellent coaching staff. The primary objective is FUN!

Ages: 4-18 years

Members: $165
Non-members: 185
Discount for each additional sibling.

May 18-July 21, 2015
Weekly meets with a Championship meet at the end of the season.

Practice: Monday through Friday, between 7 and 9 a.m.

Fun Night

Parents, enjoy a night out and leave your kids at the Jeep Rogers Y! Participants will play gym games, swim (please bring a towel and swim wear), enjoy Deep Sea, play board games, arts and crafts, and enjoy dancing to music!

Dates: Fall 2015 dates TBA

Time: 7-10 p.m.
(late fee of $1 per minute for those picked up after 10 p.m.)

Ages: Kindergarten-8th grade

Cost: $10 (includes a slice of pizza, a drink and chips)
Concessions will be sold for no more than $1.
