Member Spotlight: Clayton Ingram
Meet Clayton Ingram, a proud resident of the Earlewood neighborhood in downtown Columbia, SC, where he has spent most of his life. As the External Relations and Policy Manager for the South Carolina Housing Authority, Clayton is dedicated to serving his community. When he’s not at the YMCA, you’ll find him immersed in his hobbies—beekeeping, gardening, or cooking.
The YMCA Journey
In December 2023, Clayton decided it was time for a change. Feeling uncomfortable with his weight and overall health, he made the choice to take control of his wellness. A former member of the original YMCA location, Clayton recalled the camaraderie and energy of group exercise classes and decided to rejoin. His return marked the beginning of a transformative journey.
A year later, Clayton has seen a remarkable shift in his health and lifestyle. With his weight under control, renewed energy, and an overall sense of vitality, he feels better than ever. “Joining the Y has been a game-changer for me,” he says. What started as a challenge is now a routine he genuinely enjoys. “On the days I can’t make it, my day feels incomplete.”
Favorite Gym Routines
Clayton thrives in group exercise sessions, making it a point to visit the Y at least five days a week, usually in the mornings. “I won’t always push myself on my own, but having the instructors and other members there inspires me to work harder.” Among his favorites are the High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) classes, which offer a mix of exercises that continually push him to new limits.
“Carleen is an amazing instructor,” he shares. “She coaches everyone on proper form and makes each class fun.” Whether it’s tackling one more burpee or lifting heavier weights, Clayton credits the group setting with keeping him motivated and engaged.
What He Loves About the Y
For Clayton, stepping into the Y is an energizing experience. From the sounds of treadmills and weights to the welcoming smiles of familiar faces, the atmosphere is inspiring. He especially enjoys meeting new members who are embarking on their own fitness journeys.
After a rigorous workout, Clayton’s favorite way to unwind is in the sauna or steam room—an amenity he says is worth the membership alone.
Looking back, Clayton’s only regret is not starting sooner. His advice to others: “No matter how much or how little you do, it’s always better than doing nothing at all!”
We’re proud to have Clayton as part of our YMCA family and are inspired by his dedication and transformation!
