Katherine ‘Kate’ Heald, a retired resident of Shandon, SC, has discovered a silver lining in her active older adult years: the YMCA. Encouraged by her husband, Heald joined the YMCA despite facing several orthopedic challenges. She quickly realized that the welcoming environment and tailored programs were the perfect fit for her needs.

STRENGTHENING FAMILIES PROGRAM (SFP)
Free for Families with a child 6-17 years of age.
Parents and children are invited to participate in a series of FREE interactive, fun, family nights! Any family with a child ages 6-17 years old can participate in this awesome 11 weekly session program to learn how to improve parenting skills and communication within the family.
Each session your family will receive a catered meal, and weekly incentives for interactive family fun throughout the week.

Parkinson’s Disease is a neurological condition which manifests by slowness of movement and stiffness, among other symptoms. In 2016 the YMCA of Columbia, in a collaborative effort with members of the physical therapy community, created a pilot project, offering a class designed for Parkinson’s patients. The class includes stretching, strengthening, aerobic, and balance exercises, all of which address the physical issues of Parkinson’s Disease. The class has continued since that time and grown enough to be offered at several “Y” locations.
